Then working as a live-in Supervisor for a rescue/shelter I specialized in mother/pup care and anxiety / fearful dogs, studying behavior, senior dogs, cooking for them and learning about the nutrition that heals them from the inside out.
This journey continued with dog training, Canine Good Citizen Training, Testing and Evaluating, Florida Animal Control Officer Certification while learning what makes each dog special.
Not a secret - after dogs I love food! The success of a functional dog treat depends not only on the quality of individual ingredients, but also on how those ingredients interact together within a carefully balanced formulation. This is called ‘Synergy’.
When functional ingredients are thoughtfully selected and properly combined, they may help support digestion, mobility, immune health, skin and coat support, cognitive wellness and overall vitality. Equally important, they create opportunities for dogs to enjoy supportive nutrition through rewarding daily experiences.

What the Func are Functional Ingredients?!
Almost half of all dogs in the US - and that’s close to 90 million! - are considered members of the family and their diets mirror their humans in health and wellness and whole food nutrition. This is where the functional part of the ingredients comes in to help.
Functional ingredients are ingredients intentionally included in a recipe because they provide specific health-supporting properties beyond basic nutrition. Unlike filler ingredients, functional ingredients contribute meaningful nutritional value and are selected for a purpose.
Functional Ingredients allow a dog treat to become more than a snack. They help transform it into a wellness-supportive nutritional system.
Ingredients such as sweet potato slices, apples, blueberries, carrots and kale appeal to pet parents who want recognizable, minimally processed choices that pets crave. Yup – even kale!
As a member of Got to be NC – Agriculture, DOGSNOG dog treats use a proverbial garden full of fruits and veggies that dogs and their people love. And are good for them too!

The Funcing Purpose of Functional Ingredients
The purpose of Functional Ingredients is to support a dog’s overall health while complementing their complete diet. Dogs, like humans, benefit from nutrients that work to maintain bodily systems and promote long-term wellness.
Many dogs today face wellness challenges linked to aging, stress, food sensitivities, inactivity, obesity, and environmental factors. Functional Ingredients provide supportive nutritional tools that may help address these concerns in a gentle, food-based way.

Ingredient Synergy: How Functional Ingredients Work Together
One of the most important concepts in functional nutrition is Ingredient Synergy.
Functional ingredients aren’t loners. They are social foods. They like friends. They interact with each other to create enhanced nutritional benefits.
A well-designed dog treat formula is more than a collection of healthy ingredients, each with its own purpose. It’s a collaboration that forms a carefully constructed system where each ingredient supports and strengthens one another for whole dog wellness and happiness in their snacking. That’s a mouthful!

The Importance of Functional Ingredients in Dog Wellness
Nutrition plays a major role in a dog’s quality of life. While complete and balanced meals provide foundational nutrition, treats are often consumed daily and therefore represent an important opportunity to provide supplemental wellness support.
Functional ingredients matter because they allow treats to contribute to a dog’s overall nutritional intake rather than simply adding empty calories. Every ingredient doesn’t need to be a “superfood,” but rather every ingredient should contribute meaningfully to the final product with a purpose
In many cases, dogs willingly consume treats more eagerly than supplements or medications. Functional treats create an easier and more enjoyable way to introduce supportive nutrition into a dog’s routine.
The ingredients in treats using a functional formulation are selected intentionally for nutritional contribution, digestibility, flavor and wellness support - like DOGSNOG’s patented formulation for their dog treats.

Functional in one end - and out the other
Digestive health is one of the most important aspects of canine wellness because the digestive system affects nutrient absorption, immune function, stool quality, and overall comfort.
Many functional ingredients target digestive wellness directly. Every DOGSNOG dog treat is made to be easy to eat and easy to digest.
These ingredients may help support:
Healthy digestion Regular bowel movements Beneficial gut bacteria Nutrient absorption Stool consistency A healthy digestive system can also contribute to improved energy, coat condition, immune resilience, and overall vitality. And poop that doesn’t stink.

Functional Ingredients and Palatability
Palatability is the foundation of functional dog treat formulation as ingredients are only effective if a dog consumes them.
This balance between wellness and enjoyment is essential. Dogs should experience treats as rewarding and craveable while still receiving meaningful nutritional support from them.

The Future of Functional Dog Treats
Pet parents increasingly want products that combine nutrition, transparency, and enjoyment — not simply treats that taste good.
The pet industry continues shifting toward wellness-focused nutrition, ingredient transparency, and human-grade quality expectations. Functional dog treats are expected to become increasingly sophisticated as Pet Parents seek nutritional products that align with their own wellness values and habits.

Conclusion
Functional ingredients are reshaping the future of dog nutrition by transforming treats from simple indulgences into purposeful wellness-supporting foods. Their value lies not only in individual ingredient nutritional properties, but also in how these ingredients interact together within carefully balanced formulations.
The best functional dog treats are not built around trends or marketing buzzwords. They are built around ingredient purpose, formulation balance, digestibility, palatability, and nutritional synergy. In this way, functional treats become more than snacks — they become part of a dog’s overall wellness journey and a meaningful extension of the bond between pets and the people who love them.
DOGSNOG dog treats, created by a Culinary professional with Canine Nutritional education, specializes in combining ingredients to achieve that craveably delicious and nutritious synergy of ingredients that’s setting a new standard for fresh baked treats.

DOGSNOG soft baked dog treats provide that craveably delicious treat your dog enjoys with the whole dog wellness nutritional boost you want to help your dog live a happy, healthier life… because we love our dogs!
Visit us at www.dogsnog.com

Beyond the Biscuit™ Docutreat Article #1 Functional Ingredients in Dog Treats

http://www.dogsnog.com/blog/beyond-the-biscuittm-docutreat-article-1-functional-ingredients-in-dog-treats

http://www.dogsnog.com/blog/beyond-the-biscuittm-docutreat-article-1-functional-ingredients-in-dog-treats#comments

Uncategorized

      [...]

WELCOME to BEYOND the BISCUIT - a DOGSNOG docutreat series

http://www.dogsnog.com/blog/the-blog-about-a-blog

http://www.dogsnog.com/blog/the-blog-about-a-blog#comments

Uncategorized

      [...]
